The Many Achievements and Contributions Stan Dishong made to Classic American Motorcycling have been documented in Print Media for Seven Decades – even as recently as June 2018.  Presented here is a comprehensive – even international – collection of News and Magazine Articles, displaying the wide history of Stan’s Accomplishments…

First to be displayed are two foreign articles:

  • Roller magazine released “Vallejo Legends” in Japanese in 2018
  • Gasoline Magazine released “Stan – The Iron Man – Dishong” in Swedish in 2010 

Following those are the 16 American Newspaper and Magazine articles – in chronological order:

1956 Vaca Valley Raceway Program published:. “Cover Photo & Story of the HOG dragster”

September 8, 1957 Vacaville Drag Strip Program published:. “Stan-Dishong & Benny McKell – Old Timers at Drag Strips Photo and Description”

January 1, 1960 Hot Rod magazine published “Big Stroker” featuring an early version of the HOG dragster

February 1977. Street Chopper Magazine published:. “DISHONG – A Cure for the Hard to Find Parts Blues”

August 4, 1977. The Times Herald Newspaper, Vallejo California published. “Vallejoan Gives Cycles Life”

April 1986. City Bike Magazine published. “Stan Dishong, A Life on Two Wheels”

January 1988. The Classic Motorcycle Magazine published the article: “`Unusual, Even for a 1903 Indian” Featuring Stan‘s restoration of one of the earliest Indians produced.

August 1988. The Classic Motorcycle Magazine published the article: “First Across the Continent” Stan fully restored the only known 1896 Marks still in existence – featured in the following article.

September 1988. Road Rider Magazine published the article: 1896 Marks – “George Wyman – The original Road Rider.” First motorized vehicle to cross the United States – July 1903. Stan fully restored the only known 1896 Marks still in existence – featured in the following article.

July 30, 2003. The Port Orford, Oregon, Newspaper published the article: “The Antique Motorcycle and Auto Museum.” The article includes descriptions of all the rare bikes Stan restored and displayed at the museum..

September 1, 2007. The Antique Motorcycle Magazine published the article: “Battle Royal – Triumph vs. Harley vs. Norton – Drag Racing‘s Pioneers” The article features the HOG dragster. The first page of the article is included and the pages dedicated to ’Local Heroes’ includes the section discussing the HOG.

Jan 4, 2015. VROOM Magazine published the article: “The Art of the Motorcycle” The article features the HOG dragster, which was on display at the Forest Lawn Museum from June 27, 2014 through January 4, 2015. The article has some historical errors but clearly demonstrates the enduring interest in Stan’s contributions more than a decade into the 2,000s.

Significance of Stan’s History – The Case for inducting Stan Dishong into the American Motorcycle Association’s Hall of Fame

Stan made significant contributions to American motorcycling and we hope the history documented in the articles you just read makes our case for his induction into the Hall of Fame.  From inventing the first motorcycle slick to winning over 200 trophies to riding the “salt” at 155 mph, his racing innovations and commitment to the art of motorcycle restoration left an impressive race-track legacy.  But Stan contributed so much more than an impressive racing history.  His more important contribution was his meticulous restoration of many rare – and even some one of a kind – classic American motorcycles.  He  returned to show-room condition dozens of the world’s rarest motorcycles, many of which you can see on this site.  Were it not for Stan’s masterful restorations, these motorcycling gems would have been lost forever.  We all have Stan to thank for building unmatched racing machines and for restoring a rich stable of antique motorcycles.  He truly is the Champion of Classic American Motorcycling – and we invite you to spend some time on this web site to find out why!  Once you’re done, feel free to make your own decision concerning Stan’s worthiness for induction into the AMA Hall of Fame.
